Sunday Men

About the Team!

Our Sunday Men’s team started four years ago originally with the aim of allowing some friends to play football together without too much pressure. We began the side but realised the interest was huge and created two sides. In the three years that followed we came third place in Division Two and runners up in the Invitation Trophy with our reserves in year one. This followed in year two with the first team winning Division one on the last day of the season with a 15-0 win over local derby rivals Sporting 77, the team completed the double also beating Dunmow Rhodes in the final of the Malcolm Foy Trophy. Year three saw us consistent with the first team finishing fourth place in the Premier Division and the reserves replicating that finish in Division Two as well as runners up in the Invitation Trophy. Three Finals in three years and five top half finishes was much more than we expected. This season we have decided to drop down to one side after some reshuffles in the club led by Mark Gray and Ian Masheder under the watchful guidance of our Men’s Secretary Jo Shearer.

Latest Team Report

Bradwell Rovers 0 Great Bradfords FC 5

An excellent day at the office saw Bradfords take away all three points after a first league clean sheet of the season away to league new boys Bradwell Rovers, climbing the table from 7th to 5th as the day ended.

Some early possession saw Bradfords begin to pick away at the Bradwell back line early on with the ball just not finding the back of the net. A strong Bradwell front line peppered our defensive line with no luck leaving the score level in the early part. It did not take Bradfords too long to break the deadlock as 15 minutes in Keith Jones found himself with the ball 30 yards out, a wonder punt saw Keith put the ball over the the Bradwell keeper and in for the first of the day – be assured this will not be a goal easily forgotten.

As the play continued it was clear Bradfords were on for a second and needed to take the chances, quickly from the first Nathan Postill found himself able to break the Rovers back line and net home a powerful finish. A free kick five minutes in the corner of the Bradwell half saw Stefan Gray pick out Harry Mills for a perfectly placed headed finish to cap 3-0 and 10 minutes to half time. As we approached half time the Red and Black army started to see more chances lost before Keith Jones netted his second of the day and Bradfords fourth. A few saves for stand in keeper Sean Carter to make but not enough to concern the Bradfords management.

A similar story in the second half saw Bradfords on top for much but a resilient Bradwell side continued to come at us looking to get themselves back into the fixture. A good side Bradwell have and that was shown in this second half as Bradfords were shut out. Bradfords topped there 4-0 lead off 15 minutes from time as Jack Gilgrist powered home from outside the box to raise the GBFC goal difference in the league, topping what must be described as one of his best performances of the season.

The Sunday team go from strength to strength with yet another league victory as they welcome Stisted FC Reserves next week looking to close the gap on the teams above and challenge run away leaders Finchingfield.

Kits and Sponsors

Thanks to the SWISS BELL!

The Men’s Sunday side have had the same committed sponsor for the last four seasons. The Swiss Bell in Braintree have given unwavering support donating to ensure the team are looking their best for all occassions including every weekend in the strips they have purchased for the team. After match hospitality is also provided by the Swiss Bell something we are ever grateful for as well as them being the hosts of many of our events and our committee meetings. A lot of gratitude from us all to Scott, Doreen and all at the Swiss Bell!

The Squad

Manager: Mark Gray

Mark has been involved in grassroots football for many years having managed other sides in the league including being involved with the Panfield Bell side that we now share a home with. Mark’s son Owen is Great Bradfords longest serving player hitting his 15th season this year so Mark is fully aware of the vision the club hold. Mark is aiming to achieve some silverware this season with a slightly new look side.
